Dear Mum (An Open Letter On International Women's Day)
To Mum,
As you know, the global UN Women theme for this International Women’s Day is ‘women in leadership.’ This has encouraged me to think about all the positive impacts women have achieved while in leadership roles. A timely theme, considering the recent achievements of Whitney Wolfe Herd. But, I have a story of an inspirational woman in leadership whose tenacity and passion has inspired me, and that I believe has the potential to inspire countless others. That woman is you.
Modesty is one of your most prevalent attributes. In my opinion, you don’t speak to your accomplishments enough. So let me do it for you.
You’ve had your work published across the world, working in London, Paris, New York, Dubai and LA, to name a few. You were the first non-family member on the board of directors of one of the most prevalent companies in your industry. You’ve worked at incredible events, such as the MTV awards and New York Fashion Week. Collaborated with actors, singers, models, and politicians. When we came to Australia you had a vision for your own business that you have brought to life. Starting from nothing, not one client, you now lead your brand at the forefront of your industry. You worked your way up to lead teams as the Director Of Hair for David Jones launches. The success you have achieved has motivated me to put 100% into everything as I commence my own career.
Your passion for your industry is unparalleled. To date you must have trained hundreds of young stylists, leading them as they enter the beginnings of their own journeys. From a young age, I’ve been lucky enough to know a few of them, and watch them grow under your leadership.
This goes hand in hand with your generosity, supporting them when they need it most. I remember helping you divvy out some extra veg from weekly shops to make sure they were eating right. I remember you inviting them into our home for Christmas, where you would treat them like family. In addition to their careers, your leadership has positively impacted the lives of your employees.
Years of hearing you belting out '9 to 5' haven't helped me learn the lyrics, but Dolly Parton once said, "If your actions create a legacy that inspires others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, then, you are an excellent leader." I want you to know that I have had friends tell me how inspiring you are, people I barely know regularly voice their praise and appreciation of the person you are. Every single day I recognise the incredible power you possess, and how you have influenced me, to give my all, to become the man I am today, and to make you proud.
You are incredible, mum. And an inspirational leader. Keep kicking ass!
Love from,
Jock
